Here Is Why You Need Customer Service

Customer service is the act of taking care of the customer’s needs by providing and delivering professional, helpful, high quality service and assistance before, during, and after the customer’s requirements are met.

Sam Walton founder of Wal-Mart, an American multinational retail corporation knew the value of his customers. He had this to say;

“There is only one boss-the customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else.”

Customers in this day are very much interested in the care and attention they are given. This usually includes the welcome they receive when they walk into a store and the help they get when they have a complaint. There are many other reasons why every business person should take customer service more seriously. They include;

Great customer service sets you apart in your industry

Customers always love to buy from places where they are treated right. Sometimes you are selling the same product as your competition at a similar price. The only thing that can set you apart in this case is your customer service.

Effective yet free advertising

A customer who is given the right customer service never keeps quiet about it. They always tell other people about you. This is the most effective form of advertising-word of mouth.

Customer Loyalty

Customer service when done right can transform one-time customers into loyal customers. These customers can advocate for your business and become repeat customers too.

“Loyal customers, they don’t just come back, they don’t simply recommend you, they insist that their friends do business with you.” -Chip Bell

You can improve your customer service by;

  • Listening more to your customers
  • Identifying and anticipating customer needs
  • Making customers feel important and appreciated
  • Be quick to apologize
  • Assisting customers to understand your systems
  • Give more than customers expect.
  • Provide a method that invites constructive criticism, comments and suggestions
  • Don’t make promises that you can’t keep
  • Treat employees well and give them continuous training on customer service
  • Treat your best customers better

“In the old world, you devoted 30% of your time to building a great service and 70% of your time to shouting about it. In the new world, that inverts.” – Jeff Bezos

Customer service has become the most important part of the marketing mix. To have a thriving business therefore involves great customer service.
